  1. Scold are still used for thatching houses. These are strong briars got from the white-thorn bushes. THey are cut about three feet long. They are cleaned (the thorns are cut off) and both ends are pointed. THey are placed on a "loft" over the fire or at least in some place where the smoke will "season" them. They are left "seasoning" for a few months before use. THey are twisted (not broken) in the middle and are driven through the straw or rushes as the case may be, to keep it (the thatch) firm on the roof.

  2. Candles were also made from log deal. This wood was left in the log to dry. Then it was cut into thin blocks. These were tied together by means of a straw rope, oil was poured on the wood. THese candles were used for fishing during the winter.
